A Moment in Nature, Week 3-Winter Birds

A Moment in Nature, Week 3- Winter Birds from Wild Angle Media on Vimeo.
"A Moment in Nature" is a series of short films documenting peace and beauty in our natural world. I decided to poke through the archives of video clips I'd accumulated over the past several years and turn them into moment long reflections of experiences in nature. These shorts are designed to promote conservation of our wild lands here in Appalachia, as well as inspire folks to spend a little time in the great American outdoors. I will post one video in this series each week for the next ten weeks, ending on Earth Day, 2015. -Jon Reaves-Photographer, Filmmaker, Environmentalist

Throw Back Thursday!

Three years ago, I made this image at Price Lake, just off the Blue Ridge Parkway. I remember that cold evening like it was yesterday...the fog rolling over the lake, the colors reflected on the water, the trees in their skeleton-like form...one of my all time favorite images.

A Moment in Nature, Week 1-The Land of Ice and Snow

The Land of Ice and Snow-A Moment in Nature 1 from Wild Angle Media on Vimeo.
"A Moment in Nature" is a series of short films documenting peace and beauty in our natural world. Inspired by the works of my favorite photographer, Jim Brandenburg, I decided to poke through the archives of video clips I'd accumulated over the past several years and turn them into moment long reflections of experiences in nature. These shorts are designed to promote conservation of our wild lands here in Appalachia, as well as inspire folks to spend a little time in the great American outdoors. I will post one video in this series each week for the ten weeks, ending on Earth Day, 2015. -Jon Reaves

Hello World!

It has been a long time since I've had a blog or website to show my personal work, aside from Wild Angle Media. I plan to post mainly still photographs here, many of which are going to be from 35mm film format (although there will still be digital stills and some video work, of course). I've found my passion for still photography has been renewed in part by my 35 year old Canon A-1 manual focus. Also, by taking a sort break from photography and trekking through the forests of Appalachia without a camera, I've been able to do more observing and "taking in" of the natural world's wonders. My images since picking up a camera again have become more patient, more calculated. It's not about just getting good shots for me anymore, it's about experiencing nature, even being a part of it, rather than a bystander, peering through the narrow lens and clicking away while being oblivious to the point.

We, photographers I mean, get wrapped up in the image and the equipment and the potential for recognition and funding (or at least I did). We then forget the point, that it's all about the subject, and showing others how beautiful and complex and fragile the world around us can be. The latter is what I intend to do more of...more taking in through me rather than through a lens.

On a different note, I have an online store now where prints of my work can be purchased in various sizes. Please take a moment to browse (the link is below), I'll add more to the catalog as I get time to do so. Thanks for viewing the blog and I hope you enjoy my photographs. - Jon
